Cavity – Mental Way to Dental Cure

Toothless smile may have its own charm but very few people would wish to have it that way. Naturally, the question of dental care is engaging the minds of not only the dentists but also the commoners. Doctors advise to brush and floss our teeth regularly, gulp sufficient calcium-rich food and avoid smoking.

Toothaches are very common. It affects eating and talking. A tooth may have a hole, may decay, or simply break down. We call it cavity or caries. Dental caries were prevalent even long before the Neolithic age. On the hard surface or enamel of the tooth certain bacteria grow and multiply. Steptococcus mutans and Lactobacilli bacteria are thought to be caries-causing species.

Bacteria convert sugars into lactic acid through fermentation. These acids can dissolve mineral content. Proteins in saliva mix there. Thus a whitish film is formed. It is called plaque. This sticky germ causes decay; enamel of the tooth is eaten away by acids. Of course, saliva from mouth helps remineralization. Dental varnish or mouthwash can also help in remineralization.

A tooth is essentially mineral in content. It is very sensitive to low PH. If it drops below 5.5, mineral structure in the tooth’s surface suffers heavy loss. To see where normal eye cannot reach and to gauge the extent of damage, dentists often take the help of radiographs.

Changes in our dietary habits are often cited as the cause of such decay. But there is no regenerative method; only preventive action can be taken.

One natural way to prevent tooth decay or caries is through fluoridation of water. Fluoride is found in rocks and soil, fresh water and seawater. It is safe, cost-effective and beneficial to humanity. Snacks with sugar and starches are better avoided. Instead, intake of fiber-rich fruits and vegetables is increased. Professional tooth clearing can be done occasionally.

What is important is our mental orientation to have a better pair of teeth. Our consciousness on the importance of tooth care would do a lot to prevent the impending
Dental misery.
